Masanobu Fukuoka: Natural Farming

Masanobu Fukuoka (February 2, 1913 – August 16, 2008) was one of the pioneers of no-till gardening and developed a system referred to as "natural farming."

He is the author of The One-Straw Revolution, The Road Back to Nature and The Natural Way Of Farming. Both books are out of print but you can download PDFs of the books to read on your computer here.

Fukuoka devoted his life to developing a unique small scale organic farming system that does not require weeding, pesticide or fertilizer applications, or tilling and attempts to reproduce natural conditions as closely as possible. There is also considerable emphasis on maintaining diversity.

In this system, a ground cover of white clover grows under the grain plants to provide nitrogen. Weeds (and Daikons) are also considered part of the ecosystem, periodically cut and allowed to lie on the surface so the nutrients they contain are returned to the soil. The ground is always covered. As well as the clover and weeds, there is the straw from the previous crop, which is used as mulch, and each grain crop is sown before the previous one is harvested. This is done by broadcasting the seed among the standing crop.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) — Workers who got three days' notice that their factory was shutting its doors have occupied the building and say they won't go home without assurances they'll get severance and vacation pay.

About 250 union workers occupied the Republic Windows and Doors plant in shifts Saturday while union leaders outside criticized a Wall Street bailout they say is leaving laborers behind. (continue reading at Associated Press)

Stickers reveal if food is genetically modified

• The sticker on conventionally-grown, non-organic produce has only 4 numbers.
  
• Organically grown produce has a five-numeral code, which begins with the number 9.
  
• Genetically-modified produce has a five-numeral code which begins with the number 8.

This means a regular papaya would have a sticker saying 4011, an organic papayawould say 94011 and a GM papaya would say 84011.

Needles, CA UFO Crash, May 2008

A large object with a turquoise hue plummeted out of the sky earlier this summer and plowed into the earth south of Las Vegas near Needles, California.

Eyewitnesses say this was no meteorite, especially since a bunch of helicopters came looking for it and then hauled it away.

The object was seen in the early morning hours of May 14, 2008.
